Time (s) = File size (MB) ÷ Speed (MB/s)
Since ISPs advertise speed in Mbps, first convert: MB/s = Mbps ÷ 8.
Example: Downloading a 10 GB file at 100 Mbps:
- 10 GB = 10,240 MB
- 100 Mbps = 12.5 MB/s
- 10,240 ÷ 12.5 = 819 seconds ≈ 13 min 39 s

Why is my download slower than the calculator estimate?
The calculator uses your full connection speed as the download rate. In reality, factors like Wi-Fi signal loss (20–50% slower), server-side speed caps, network congestion during peak hours, and protocol overhead all reduce actual throughput. For the closest result, download over wired Ethernet from a fast CDN server.
What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s in download speed?
Mbps (megabits per second) is what ISPs advertise. MB/s (megabytes per second) is what your download manager shows. Since 1 byte = 8 bits, divide Mbps by 8 to get MB/s. A 100 Mbps connection downloads at 12.5 MB/s — not 100 MB/s.
How long does it take to download 50 GB at 1 Gbps?
At 1 Gbps (125 MB/s), a 50 GB (51,200 MB) file takes approximately 6 minutes 49 seconds under ideal conditions. Gigabit fibre is the fastest widely available consumer connection speed.
Does file compression affect download time?
Yes. Compressed files (ZIP, 7z, etc.) are smaller, so they download faster. However, the decompression time after downloading is not included in this calculator. For network planning purposes, always use the compressed file size if you know it.
